He served as a member of the National Assembly of Pakistan from 2002 to 2013, representing his constituency with dedication and diligence.
In a notable turn of events in 2023, Chaudhry Wajahat Hussain was appointed as the president of the Pakistan Muslim League-Q (PML-Q) after his brother, Chaudhry Shujaat Hussain, was temporarily removed from the position by a faction within the party. However, the Election Commission of Pakistan later deemed this decision illegal and reinstated Chaudhry Shujaat Hussain to his rightful position, restoring all powers to him.
Chaudhry Wajahat Hussain’s political journey began with his election to the National Assembly from Constituency NA-104 (Gujrat-I) in the 2002 Pakistani general election, representing the PML-Q. He secured a significant victory with 82,126 votes, defeating his opponent Nawabzada Ghazanfar Ali Gul. Additionally, he contested for the seat of the National Assembly from Constituency NA-105 (Gujrat-II) as an independent candidate during the same election but was unsuccessful in his bid.
Undeterred by setbacks, Chaudhry Wajahat Hussain continued his political endeavors and was re-elected to the National Assembly from Constituency NA-104 (Gujrat-I) in the 2008 Pakistani general election, once again representing the PML-Q. His resounding victory with 96,379 votes reaffirmed his popularity among the constituents.
Throughout his tenure in the National Assembly, Chaudhry Wajahat Hussain served the nation in various capacities within the federal cabinet. Notably, he was inducted into the federal cabinet of Prime Minister Yousaf Raza Gillani on 3 May 2011, where he assumed the role of Federal Minister for Overseas Pakistanis. Subsequently, he took on several other significant portfolios, including Federal Minister for Labour and Manpower, and Federal Minister for Human Resource Development, demonstrating his versatility and commitment to public service.
Chaudhry Wajahat Hussain’s tenure in the federal cabinet continued under Prime Minister Raja Pervaiz Ashraf until May 2013, where he played a vital role as the Federal Minister for Human Resource Development.
